ELEMENTS AND PRINCIPLE OF DESIGN

Select three interior spaces that each conveys a different message, mood or feeling. For example: a space that feels intimate, a space that feels elegant and a space that feels airy.

Describe how these moods have been created in each space using the elements and principles of design as they have been discussed so far.

It is important to examine each space you choose, to observe and understand how a specific mood and feeling has been achieved.

Work through the elements and principles of design; some will be immediately obvious, while others not so.

If you find pictures of beautiful, harmonious spaces, you will find that most of the elements will be working together.

If you feel the space is lacking harmony, you might like to mention why, and how you would change and improve it.

Element of space:

Space is tight in this one-bedroom flat but a multifunctional design, combining living, dining and study areas, makes the most of every metre. Designed as a whole, every piece in this room works beautifully together, but the space is also cleverly zoned. Element of Pattern:

The pattern on the rug works well with the curtains as well as the sofas.

Principle of Balance:

Balance has been achieved through the ceiling to floor drapes and also through the colour balance and furniture placement of the L-shaped sofa on the right and the dining room chairs on the left of the space.

Principle of Rhythm & Repetition:

The theme in this space is repetition. The repetition of chair curves and straight lines are also in form.

Principle of Emphasis:

The main emphasis in this room is the fireplace, dining chairs & pendant light. The fireplace being black in colour draws one's eyes to it.

Principle of Proportion and Scale:

Large scale pieces such as the armchair, rug and wide floorboards actually make the room feel bigger. The size of the space is in proportion to the furniture size.

The sofa is low but super comfy, and the large rug extending from beneath it creates an illusion of even more room.

Principle of Harmony:

Harmony has been achieved through the use of white, grey and black colours. The white carries a message of purity and simplicity.
